Vision

To inculcate an appreciation for Math in our pupils who are effective problem solvers.

 

Mission

To develop pupils into independent lifelong learners who are equipped with problem-solving skills for real-life application.

 

Our approach

We adopt a 4A approach in the teaching and learning of Math – Awareness, Acquisition, Appreciation and Accomplishment. Hence our programmes and activities are also specially tailored to:

 

  • Increase pupils’ awareness of Math in everyday life.
  • Help pupils acquire Math skills and concepts.
  • Enable pupils to appreciate and foster interest in Math.
  • Create opportunities for pupils to have a sense of accomplishment in Math.

Sharing Sessions for Parents

Sharing sessions are organised for parents at the beginning of the year to share strategies and resources to help or guide their child in the learning of Mathematics. We value the partnership with parents and seek to engage them in the pupils’ educational journey.

Fun-with-Math Programme

Fun with Math is a biannual event that runs for a week during the recesses. It aims to encourage pupils to engage in purposeful play. The activities curated for the respective levels provided pupils with opportunities to engage in ‘playful learning’ beyond their classrooms while picking up skills such as logical reasoning and spatial visualisation. It was heartening to observe the enthusiastic participation of the teachers and pupils as well as the rich discussions generated. Pupils were recognised for their participation and correct responses. The winning classes for each level received their prizes during assembly. Till we meet again in Term 3!

Fun with Maths! 

The second season for Fun with Math took on a different form in Semester 2. Familiar everyday objects were on display along the walk zone. These static self-directed and differentiated learning stations were specially curated to demonstrate the possible application of Mathematics in real life. During the pupils’ recesses, they visited the stations and it was heartening to see them engaging in meaningful conversations about Mathematics with their friends.

Learning Support for Math

Learning Support for Mathematics (LSM) is an early intervention effort aimed at providing additional support to pupils who do not have foundational numeracy skills and knowledge to access the Primary 1 Math curriculum. Pupils will be supported by a LSM Teacher at the beginning of Primary 1. Support continues in Primary 2 for pupils who need it.

 

Math Banded Remediation Programme

From Primary 3 onwards, pupils are given additional support during the Math Banded Remediation Programme. The lessons are specially crafted to address pupils’ learning needs and close up their learning gaps. The class size is also smaller to allow greater interaction between the teachers and the pupils.

 

Math Buddy Programme

The Math Buddy Programme is a peer tutoring system that benefits both the tutor and tutee socially and academically by motivating them to learn. The tutees are able to learn from their peers and communicate mathematically in a one-to-one setting. There is an old saying, “To teach is to learn twice.” Thus, this programme also gives the tutors the opportunity to revise the concepts learnt previously.

Cooking with Math

Math concepts are integrated in the school’s Home Skills Programme. All phases of cooking require some concepts of Math - meal planning, grocery shopping, food budgeting, measuring ingredients and conversions. Through the hands-on sessions, pupils will be able to make the connection between the Math concepts they have learnt and real-life applications.

Fun with Mathematics Games

People of all ages love to play games that are fun and motivating. This year, the Math Department piloted the Fun with Mathematics Games Programme to encourage pupils to strengthen their Mathematics mastery through multi-sensory play. This programme offers pupils an alternative form of play to engage in during recess every Tuesday and Thursday. We are proud to have this programme run by our Primary 3 to Primary 5 Mathematics ambassadors with the guidance of our teachers. These Mathematics ambassadors attended a training session prior to the start of this programme to familiarise themselves with their roles. They also provided feedback on the suitability of the games. 
A wide range of board games and puzzles have been carefully selected to ensure that they are suitable for the different levels of pupils. Pupils get to explore number combinations, which help to strengthen their mental calculation and factual fluency. Besides board games and puzzles, pupils also get to participate in hands-on activities such as formation of images using tangrams, folding origami and paper cutting. These hands-on activities help to improve pupils’ spatial visualisation and recognition. The Mathematics Ambassadors are able to show their schoolmates how the games are played and guide them in the art of origami and paper cutting confidently. The pupils enjoy taking part in these activities and are happy to be able to bring home their paper cutting and origami artwork.
